Faraway Families Commitment to Community

The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” is a sentiment Faraway Families holds dear. Our village is our community that helps shape and mould those around us; as such, we give back to it whenever we can.

As a community member and business, Faraway Families gives back in several ways including: book donations to community organizations, school readings, discounts for community projects and charity partnerships.

Community Donations

Faraway Families donates copies of its books to local not-for-profit and charity groups.

In November 2019, we partnered with the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (CMFRC) in honour of Remembrance Day. With more than 2000 Canadian military personnel deployed on approximately 20 different missions, we know there are a lot of families far away from their loved ones. For every holiday promotion sold within Canada, we donated one copy of Faraway Families to the CMFRC.

Copies of Faraway Families were gifted as part of a send-off to departing soldiers in a deployment in from Calgary to Latvia.

For the 2020 holiday season, we have partnered with Kids Up Front Calgary for our Holiday Promotion to donate copies of Faraway Families. For every Holiday Promotion Package sold between November 1 and December 15, 2020, we donated a copy of our book to deserving Calgary and area kids.

School and Community Group Readings

Jena and Jocelyn regularly participate in school readings and presentations to children ranging in ages from preschool through elementary schools. They have also participated in Care Home facilities encouraging elderly people keep connected to their loved ones near and far, donating and encouraging postcard sending and book readings between their family members.

In early 2020, Faraway Families partnered with a Federal Program with the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association (CIWA) to provide a special reading and copies of Faraway Families to its graduating preschoolers from the Federal Governments Pilot Program: Innovative Approach to Supporting Early Learning of Immigrant Children.

In-person and virtual author visits are possible upon request.
Age-specific curriculum can be created to facilitate conversation and dialogue.

Corporate Discounts for CSR Activities

Companies and Government Organizations are a big part of our community and Faraway Families believes in providing them with discounts when they give to charitable and not-for-profit organizations. In 2019, Faraway Families partnered with ENMAX to donate over 600 books to various charitable organizations in Calgary. ENMAX also gifted Faraway Families 10-pack postcards to its staff in support of families missing each other and staying connected through the COVID-19 Pandemic.

If your company is looking to donate books to worthy causes in your community as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, please contact Jena and Jocelyn directly here.  We have many organizations we have partnered with to date who eagerly await donations of books from CSR partners.
